Geocaching all Over

Getting outdoors can be intimidating, and it can drive most people away. People need to realize that the outdoors has so much to offer and it doesn’t always have to involve hiking, climbing, skiing, canoeing, etc. There are other outdoor activities that we can all enjoy.

I recently came across something called geocaching. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Sounds fun, right? The only necessities are a GPS device or a GPS-enabled mobile phone so that you can navigate to the cache, and a Geocaching.com Membership (which you can sign up for free with an email or a Facebook account.)

Here are some of the basic steps when geocaching:

  1. Register for a free Basic Membership.

  2. Visit the "Hide & Seek a Cache" page.

  3. Enter your postal code and click "search."

  4. Choose any geocache from the list and click on its name.

  5. Enter the coordinates of the geocache into your GPS Device.

  6. Use your GPS device to assist you in finding the hidden geocache.

  7. Sign the logbook and return the geocache to its original location.

  8. Share your geocaching stories and photos online.

Although there aren’t many rules in geocaching, there a few to note. First if you decide to take the cache make sure to put something of equal or greater value. Also make sure you are logging your findings. Last, write about your experience at www.geocaching.com. Although you can start geocaching anywhere you are located, I’ll leave the Geocaching in Colorado webpage so you can get started.

Geocaching is the perfect outdoor activity for beginners who want to get out there but aren’t into the typical outdoor activities. The great thing about geocaching is that geocaches can be found all over the world. These locations can be very diverse. They may be at your local park, at the end of a long hike, underwater or on the side of a city street. You never really know until you start looking. You can enjoy geocaching with friends, family, and on your own.
